BVI Spring 2014 Bookings Are Open!
The Spring Sailing 2014 bookings to the British Virgin Islands are open from today. We are so excited for next year’s spring sailing in BVI following a fantastic year this year. The Caribbean is a stunning retreat with its palm lined white sandy beaches and picturesque villages – a true paradise. We are welcoming you and your friends to join us on an epic voyage across the Caribbean. You will be able to gain a unique experience yachting across the crystal blue sea with people from all around the world.
What are you doing for New Year!?
Winter: The coldest season of the year that tends to be associated with blizzards, pasty-white skin, coats, thick leggings, snow, rain and ice.
The Yacht Week: A year long season that tends to be associated with sailing trips, warm weather, bikinis, sun-tans and Swedish house music.
Two friends discussed how they would be bringing in the new year. One of them decided that 2013 would be a year to remember. The only way to really celebrate the beginning of it would be to do something different, something big. From what she recalled, every past new year celebration seemed to involve a plan that created nothing but an overrated sense of excitement that turned out to be a disappointment. She wanted a plan that would allow her to dance amidst palm trees, meet new people, swim, feel the sea, and leave with her skin 10 shades darker than when she had arrived. So, it was time to mix it up a bit and book a boat with The Yacht Week in the British Virgin Islands.
If any of you can relate to the story mentioned above, you are ready to embark on a sun-splendid adventure to celebrate the New Year. The Yacht Week is more than excited to kick off their first event of 2013 in the BVI’s. Bring your bikinis, tanning lotion, sandals, and beach towels.
Wrapped up in scarves and winter wool while sitting by the fireplace, some of you may be snoozing off already into your dream that is soon to become a reality. Say goodbye for now to the cold and long days of winter as the energetic beats of house music tap you on the shoulder to get up and dance in the warmth of the Caribbean air. Wake up and smell the coconuts, The Yacht Week is taking you to the BVI’s!
Painkillers in Paradise
Hostess-extraordinaire, Alissa, introduces us to a Caribbean liquid specialty, the Painkiller, and it’s potential to influence your (volleyball) game in the British Virgin Islands…
“It’s like we’re sailing into a postcard,” I remarked awestruck.
Never mind that five of us were squeezed into a dinghy sporting matched gold and red bathing suits and cheetah print headbands, carting a jug of rum punch. As the postcard island veered dangerously closer, we all grinned at each other, more than ready for an epic team volleyball tournament set on the pristine white beaches of Sandy Cay yelling our team cheer.
Palm trees swayed lightly and the sand felt like silk in between my toes as we hauled the dinghy onshore. Turquoise skies stretched into the horizon and I was in paradise; literally. Four days into my British Virgin Islands spring break adventure and I was a new person. My biggest dilemma was how to carry the 12 Painkiller cocktails I’d ordered back to my friends at the Soggy Dollar Bar, named for the state of your cash after swimming to shore for the famous coconut cream and rum drinks.
A pile of flip flops lay alone and untouched in a corner of the boat next to my hair dryer and cell phone. Half used bottles of sunscreen littered the saloon and we were all pleasantly crispy by the end of the day. Our motley crew hailed from Canada, San Francisco, Seattle and a lone Norwegian skipper for good measure but everyone agreed that Bob Marley was just perfect for sailing back to the harbor. The sun had begun to set in the cloudless sky as we replayed the day: falling in the sand pit during tug of war, topless chicken fighting, and the demise of the rum punch. The one thing we could all agree on was that we should have won the volleyball tournament. “I mean who doesn’t give it to the team whose cheer is “that’s what she said?”

The Yacht Week Is Taking Off!
Good news everyone – The Yacht Week is taking off in style! During week 32 of Croatia South we’ll shoot an amazing new set of videos as part of The Yacht Week Official Trailer 2013. And oh boy, it’s going to be crazy! Following on from the great success of our current Official Trailer (with over 2 million YouTube views), we wanted something different, something that has literally never been done before. We managed to fly in an amazing collective of 9 guys, known as MAUP MINDS, with a long track record in the professional film and TV industry. Together with MAUP MINDS, we have managed to involve some major players that will make this production truly unheard off!
For instance, Sony Europe was kind enough to supply us with their latest NEXFS700 240fps pre-production camera, offering the craziest slo mo’s and full HD shot capabilities.
Furthermore, we managed to include one of the world’s leading aerial drone filming companies – Aerialtronics. They will bring over two experienced pilots, two camera operators, and two of their latest remote controlled drones capable of carrying the NEXFS700 at full cruising speed! This will actually be the first time ever that a NEXFS700 will go airborne!
Combine all that with an amazing crowd, brilliant scenery, and you have the recipe for yet another amazing Yacht Week video!
If you want to keep track of the whole production, the crew, backstage sneak previews and awesome pictures then follow MAUP MINDS on Tumblr!

Free Spirits of the Caribbean
This week, our guest writer, Flora, revisits a recent journey to the British Virgin Islands…
A Rum with a View

Steady trade winds, an island-flecked channel, sparkling waters and hundreds of protected salt-rimmed bays – the British Virgin Islands are a sailing fantasy land, comprising more than 60 unspoiled islands and cays.
The Yacht Week’s base at Wickham’s Cay, Tortola, is the starting point for a week in the British Virgin Islands (BVI’s). Tortola is the biggest island in terms of population and commerce. You will find a mash-up of guesthouses, mountain villas and beach-side resorts. There is plenty of food for thought, from traditional island dishes to fare served up in established islanders’ gardens. It took a ‘Painkiller’, a local rum cocktail, or two to wind down and adjust to the pace of life after a long flight via Antigua.

Sao was to be my floating home for the next two weeks, under the watchful eye of Rasta skipper Philmore. After a night in Tortola, we were keen to set sail and make the most of the morning breeze. Leaving the hustle and bustle of the island behind, we looked to the distant white sandy beaches of Peter Island. Deadman’s Bay makes an excellent day-anchorage, and a safe overnight haven providing there is no northern swell. The mile-long, crescent-shaped beach with towering coconut palms that overlooks Dead Chest and Salt Island is the quintessential Caribbean. The bay offers spectacular snorkelling, where you can glimpse Green Sea Turtles gliding through the glassy waters. After just one day, I had adjusted to the pace of the West Indies, aided by the beat of reggae and heady flavours of coconut rum.
As a fairly cautious sailer, I was a little concerned when our engine cut out on the second day. A gusty wind and a nearby coral reef added to the excitement and I began to wonder which locker held the flares! It transpired that the fuel gauge was broken and the diesel had run out. Philmore seemed unfazed and amused, telling me, ‘That’s why you have sails, man, no worries!’

The next morning we made a short sail over to the yachties’ favourite, Jost Van Dyke, a little island with a big personality. There, I spent most of the day diving off the yacht, swimming in crystal-clear waters and taking the dinghy ashore to explore the island. Although it is only four square miles, Jost Van Dyke’s ‘good-time’ reputation has spread globally. This is thanks to the island’s reggae main man, Foxy Callwood. With a beach for a street, which features the Stress Free Bar, home of the Painkiller, this is the essence of the BVI’s. As one local said, ‘When Main Street is still a beach, you know life is good!’
Most of the BVI’s is a national park and therefore anchoring is prohibited in many of the bays in order to protect the reefs. Instead, a common site is mooring buoys, which can be rather amusing to pick up. The snorkelling sites are vast and varied. You can choose between dive sites, quiet caves or RMS Rhone, one of the Caribbean’s most famous wrecks.
The wind picked up for our sail across to Norman Island. As the boat heeled, the crew scrambled to the right side of the hull, metres above the waves. The sensation of cutting through the water and the sound of the wind in the sails was thrilling. The BVIs’ largest uninhabited land mass feels like a real pirate hang-out. It was supposedly the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island and is the perfect spot to watch the world go by on deck with some sundowners. We then moved onwards to Willie T’s, a bar and restaurant on an old schooner, moored in the bay. All you need is some cash and a dinghy and you are ready to party. The atmosphere, location and ‘Dark n’ Stormy’ rum cocktails make this a spot not to be missed. When the rum runs dry, be sure to board the right boat among 60 identical yachts moored in the bay!
Sail Fast, Live Slow.

As my yacht week drew to an end, we strolled barefoot along the beach in search of one last ‘BVI-Bushwhacker’. I spot a t-shirt with the slogan, ‘Sail fast, live slow.’ This is the essence of the BVI’s and something I will definitely take back to my London lifestyle, albeit to my boss’s disappointment!
Bookings for the British Virgin Islands New Year and Spring Sailing events open tomorrow (Friday 27th April, 2012) at 9am GMT!
The Peter Island Spa Package for The Yacht Week
Whilst we are being spoiled with some glorious weather in London as I write this, it doesn’t really come close to what The Yacht Week guests currently out in the British Virgin Islands are enjoying. We have hooked up with Peter Island Resort, a privately owned resort that is only accessible by boat or helicopter, to offer an exclusive Peter Island Girls Only Spa, which includes an indulgent 75 minute custom massage, lunch served on the beautiful spa terrace and full use of the jacuzzi, steam room, swimming pool and outdoor lounge area. This is the perfect pampering package to feel refreshed and rejuvenated and ready to get back onto the open water.
New Trailer for the British Virgin Islands 2012!
With Spring Break fast approaching it can only mean one thing… two weeks of pure pleasure with The Yacht Week in the British Virgin Islands. As a mark of how excited we are getting here, we have produced a brand spanking new BVI video to celebrate the 2012 event. The video, put together by our good friends Hare meets Tortoise Productions, takes the audio mash concept and visualises it, so that the beautiful Caribbean shots are controlled by the DJ and his deck!
Alana Hutton-Shaw, who Directed the video which was shot over the New Year event, told us, “This was one of the most insane Yacht Week trips I’ve done and the best start to the New Year – my only worry is that nothing this year will match up to it!”
We’ve got the medicine Alana… How about coming out again for our Spring Sailing event!?
