What happens when a festival stops staying in one place
Mixmag Germany sent writer Alessandra Sola to find out what happens when a festival stops staying in one place. She joined Yacht Week's 20th-anniversary Croatia route from 13 to 18 July 2026, straight off the back of Ultra Europe in Split, and spent the week trying to work out where the party actually is when it moves with you. Her answer is less about white catamarans and sunsets than you might expect.

Sola picks up the story just as Ultra Europe wraps in Split, and the shift she describes is immediate: from tens of thousands of people in one place to a handful of people on a boat, speakers already going before the lines are even untied. The line-up she'd just left behind, including Calvin Harris, Martin Garrix and Dom Dolla, had filled Park Mladeži for three nights. Once the fleet set sail, that scale gave way to something smaller and more social, built around melodic house and tech house rather than a main stage.
Her answer leans on how sound actually travels at sea, drifting between boats, fading into the wind, never quite the same twice, and on what a week of shared cabins and shared schedules does to a group of strangers within a few days. Two stops get most of her attention. One is Carpe Diem Beach on Hvar, which she frames as the route's most openly hedonistic stop. The other is Vis, where Fort George, the British-built fortress dating to the early 19th century, does something to the night she spends several paragraphs trying to pin down: the stone holds the sound in a way the open sea never does.
She's also refreshingly unromantic about the rest of it: the comfort is real, but so is the mess, the small cabins and the discipline it takes to share a boat for six days. As she puts it, the actual privilege on board isn't luxury in the expected sense: "it is a luxury of continuity."
