Every skipper begins their journey at Quarterdeck Skipper Academy. There, you’ll gain the technical skills, safety training, and leadership experience needed to confidently take charge of a yacht full of guests. Whether you want to launch a professional career in the maritime industry or just want the most exciting summer job imaginable, this is where it starts.

Your mission

Skipper Academy is a professional training course, not a beginner sailing programme. From day one, students are at the helm of 40 to 52ft yachts in real sailing conditions. The bar at entry reflects that.

To attend Skipper Academy you must:

  • Hold a valid skipper license (ICC, RYA Coastal Skipper, or equivalent) recognised in the country where you will be sailing
  • Hold a valid VHF radio license (SRC or equivalent) where required
  • Have enough practical sailing experience to handle a larger yacht competently in normal conditions before the course begins

Licenses are not taught or issued at Skipper Academy. You must arrange these independently before applying.

Key responsibility

People often ask how to become a skipper. The practical answer is simple: you need the right experience, the right licence, and the ability to operate calmly and professionally when things don’t go exactly as planned.

As a skipper, you’re responsible for:

  • The safety of guests and crew
  • The yacht and its systems
  • Decisions made in ports, marinas, and at anchor
  • The overall tone of the week on board

Many sailors are confident when sailing with friends but haven’t worked in a commercial charter setting. Quarterdeck’s training focuses on that transition between recreational sailing and operating as the person in charge.

The ideal candidate

  • Minimum age: 20 years old
  • Sailing experience (RYA Day Skipper or equivalent minimum; Yachtmaster preferred)
  • Strong leadership and decision-making under pressure
  • Team player — ready to collaborate with your host and crew
  • Available for multiple weeks during the Mediterranean season (June–August)
  • Service-minded and socially confident
